LMHCTherapists.com is a directory of Licensed Mental Health Counselors who offer therapy online. It exists to make one thing easier: comparing counselors by state, by what they work with and by how they work, before you decide who to contact.
First, how this site is paid for
LMHCTherapists.com is a commercial directory. It is free to use and carries no advertising, but if you go on to sign up for therapy through a link here, this site will earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
It is not a state licensing board, a professional association or an accrediting organization, and it is not affiliated with any of them. The commission does not change who is listed or the order they appear in.
What an LMHC is
LMHC stands for Licensed Mental Health Counselor. It is a license issued by a state board to counselors who have completed a master's degree in counseling, a period of supervised clinical practice and a licensing exam. The exact requirements are set by each state.
Not every state uses the name. Florida, New York, Washington, Indiana and Massachusetts call this license an LMHC, and most other states license the same kind of counselor as an LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) or under a similar title. Some counselors here list more than one credential, which can happen when someone holds licenses in more than one state.
Who is listed
The directory currently holds 2,732 counselors, organized across 30 states, 77 topics and 21 methods. Every one of them lists an LMHC among their credentials.
Coverage is not even. About half of the counselors listed are licensed in Florida, and most of the rest are in New York, Washington, Indiana and Massachusetts. We only build a state page where there are enough counselors to compare, so a state with one or two people does not have its own page. If you live elsewhere, a counselor licensed in your state may still appear in the full list.
Listing a method or a topic is not a qualification in it. A counselor appearing under a topic or a method means they list it, not that they are certified in it. If specific training matters to you, ask the counselor directly.
Where the information comes from
Counselor details, including credentials, license numbers, NPI numbers, years in practice, topics and methods, come from BetterHelp, the platform these counselors work through. We do not collect them from counselors directly and we do not verify anyone's license ourselves. You can check a license with the state board that issued it and an NPI with the national NPI registry.
The written summaries on each profile are produced with the help of AI, working only from those facts. They are written not to add anything that is not in the source information: no invented specialties, diagnoses, availability or results. If something looks wrong, please tell us and we will correct it.
How listings are ordered
Ordering is not for sale: no counselor pays to be listed, to rank higher, or to be featured. There are no ratings or reviews here, because we have no reliable source for them and would rather show nothing than invent a score. We also do not publish whether someone is taking new clients. It changes constantly and anything we showed would be out of date by the time you read it.
